UTM BASICS

What are UTM parameters?

UTM parameters are query-string labels added to a URL so analytics systems can identify campaign traffic consistently. The three core fields are source, medium and campaign; content and term add optional detail.

utm_source

Identifies the traffic source or publisher: newsletter, partner_name, google, linkedin.

utm_medium

Identifies the channel type: email, cpc, paid_social, organic_social.

utm_campaign

Identifies the campaign: product_launch, black_friday_2026, webinar_sep.

EMAIL EXAMPLE

A practical UTM naming convention

?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=product_launch&utm_content=hero_cta

Consistency matters because analytics treats different spellings and capitalization as different values. Decide conventions before a team generates dozens of links.

HOW TO USE IT

Build cleaner campaign tracking

Start with the final destination URL, then enter source, medium and campaign. Use lowercase, stable names where possible; prefer underscores or hyphens over inconsistent spaces; use content to distinguish placements or creative variants. Before sending, click the generated URL and confirm it reaches the intended page with parameters intact.

Avoid tagging internal website links with UTMs. Campaign parameters are primarily for identifying inbound campaign traffic. Internal UTM links can overwrite or fragment attribution in analytics.

COMMON MISTAKES

UTM problems that create messy analytics

Changing capitalization

Email, email and EMAIL can appear as separate values depending on reporting setup.

Inventing names every time

Use a documented taxonomy so campaigns remain comparable across people and periods.

Putting sensitive data in URLs

UTM values are visible in the address bar and may be logged. Do not put passwords, personal data or secrets in them.

PARAMETER REFERENCE

What each UTM parameter should describe

utm_source

The specific source sending traffic, such as newsletter, linkedin or a partner name.

utm_medium

The channel category, such as email, cpc or paid_social.

utm_campaign

The marketing initiative, launch or promotion you want to compare in reporting.

utm_content

Optional detail for creative or placement, such as hero_cta or footer_link.

utm_term

Optional term detail, historically associated with paid-search keywords but usable within a deliberate taxonomy.

EMAIL TRACKING EXAMPLE

How to tag multiple links in one email

A September newsletter might use the same source, medium and campaign for every campaign link, while utm_content distinguishes hero_button from text_link. That preserves campaign identity while allowing placement-level analysis.

utm_source=september_newsletter · utm_medium=email · utm_campaign=automation_guide · utm_content=hero_button

NAMING SYSTEM

Create a UTM taxonomy before campaigns become difficult to audit

Google Analytics maps manually tagged UTM values into traffic-source and campaign dimensions, and Google’s current guidance stresses consistent values because inconsistent naming fragments reporting. Decide what each field means before a team creates dozens of links.

UTM QA checklist

  • Use the correct final destination URL.
  • Keep source and medium definitions consistent.
  • Avoid accidental capitalization variants.
  • Never place personal or confidential information in UTM values.
  • Test redirects so parameters survive.
  • Confirm the expected campaign dimensions appear in analytics.

FAQ

UTM builder questions

Which UTM parameters are required?

For useful campaign reporting, source, medium and campaign are the core fields. Content and term are optional.

Should UTM values be lowercase?

A consistent lowercase convention reduces accidental fragmentation such as Email versus email.

Can I use spaces?

URLs can encode spaces, but a documented underscore or hyphen convention is usually easier to read and maintain.

Should I use UTMs on links inside my own website?

Usually no. Use them for inbound campaign attribution; internal tagging can interfere with attribution.
